Small details can stop your photo from meeting the rules.
Home Affairs lists incorrect backgrounds, reflections from glasses and shadows on the image or background as rejection reasons. The photograph must also remain unedited. We control these details before checking the finished file.
Neutral or light grey background
The background must be neutral or light grey and must contrast with your face. A common home wall may have the wrong tone, weak contrast or visible shadows.
Glasses must come off
Glasses must be removed. Reflections on the lenses are a listed rejection reason. If glasses cannot be removed for medical reasons, they should be untinted.
No filters or background removal
The image must be unedited. Phone beautify filters and background removal can change skin detail, moles, wrinkles, scars, red eyes or the background.

Use a direct digital copy.
For an online application through ImmiAccount, you upload a digital copy. A scan of a printed photo is not acceptable. A photograph of a photo is also not acceptable.
Home Affairs recommends a professional passport photo provider. It does not recommend online passport photo services or mobile apps because their images may not meet the image quality requirements.
