The UK passport application is digital first, so your file must meet strict requirements. It must remain unaltered, show clear facial detail and use a plain light-coloured background. You can upload a digital image or enter a photo code from a shop or booth. We frame and check your photo on the spot, then provide the digital file.

Small details can stop a digital photo from meeting the rules.
A home photo can look acceptable while missing an official requirement. Soft focus, facial shadows, background objects or reflected light can make the image unsuitable. The UK also requires an unaltered colour photograph taken within the last month. We control the light, background and framing before checking the finished file.
Clear face, closed mouth
Face forward and look directly at the camera with your mouth closed. Your eyes must remain open and visible, with no hair covering them.
Plain background, no shadows
The background must be plain and light-coloured, with clear contrast around you. No shadows may appear on your face or behind you.
Glasses only when necessary
Avoid glasses unless you must wear them. Frames, glare, reflections and shadows cannot cover your eyes, while tinted glasses and sunglasses are not allowed.

UK passport photos for younger children.
Children must appear alone, without toys or dummies anywhere in the photograph. Children under 6 do not need to look directly at the camera or hold a plain expression. Babies under 1 do not need to keep their eyes open.
A baby may have their head supported, but the supporting hand cannot appear. Babies should lie on a plain light-coloured sheet and be photographed from above.
